Adocem and Habitat renew agreement to develop capacity building for low-income families
Asociación Dominicana de Productores de Cemento Pórtland (Adocem) and Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic renewed an alliance of inter – agency collaboration through which seek to develop the capacities of self – construction of low – income families that make up the program access to microcredit by Habitat for Humanity in the country.
Since 2011, Habitat and Adocem are working together to influence the qualitative housing deficit in the country, within the framework of the project entitled “Access Services Building Housing”, whose main objective is to train in the field of construction through basic regulatory modules.
The document was signed by the leadership of respective institutions, Cesarina Fabian, national director of Habitat for Humanity, and Adriano Brunetti, president of Adocem, during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the business organization.
“Essentially, through this project we seek to promote best practices in construction techniques to achieve an improvement in the quality of self-constructed or constructed housing through informal channels, and thus contribute to reducing high levels of risk and vulnerability the facilities in which they live thousands of low-income families in our country, “noted Cesarina Fabian, national director of Habitat for Humanity.
He said, in that vein, Habitat works with families by facilitating access to micro-finance housing through its financial partners and accompanying them during technical assistance in construction, so that it will translate into a significant improvement in their quality of lifetime.
For his part the president of Adocem emphasized that the initiative represents a double opportunity for families who “in addition to access to housing built correctly, they learn several trades during the execution of the work.”
“So far 104 families have been auto-builders trained in basic construction techniques grounded in the manual designed for these purposes,” he said.
For the business leader, lack of forcing resources to self-construct their own roof, and particularly in this project, stressed the beneficiary of the learning home to be workers of their construction acquiring basic knowledge in handling materials such as cement.
He said that Adocem has in addition to providing resources, supported in the design and production of the content of instructional training given the experience and ability of the industry in all matters relating to construction.
The alliance provides that, through teaching materials, community leaders in areas where Habitat is developing its construction projects and home repair is well trained.
Both institutions agree that initiatives like this are more than relevant in a scenario like ours, which has a housing deficit of one million units, of which more than half is due to the poor quality with which they are built.
